VVS Laxman: India vs Australia, Jasprit Bumrah’s variations remind me of Wasim Akram

VVS Laxman said ‘Bumrah’s variations remind him of Pakistani great Wasim Akram.

Jasprit Bumrah has performed in an influential manner in India Vs Australia third test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. India takes home the trophy by winning the third test by stunning 137-run at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Jasprit Bumrah finished with career-best figures at the venue and scripted a surplus of records for himself. After the match, former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman said that “Bumrah’s variations remind him of Pakistani great Wasim Akram”.

Bumrah completed with 9 for 86 in the third Test – which turns out to be the most successful figure by an Indian pacer in Australia, overhauling the great Kapil Dev.

His first innings 6 for 33 helped India to fold Australia for a dismal score of 151 that handed the visitors 292-runs lead.

In the second innings, he picked three wickets and finished off 2018 with 48 wickets to his name.

What I liked was not even once did he lose control, or did he look as if he was ineffective. That shows on how much he was worked hard on his fitness, how skilful he is, and how much control he has got with his bowling,” stated by former India batsman VVS Laxman.

For me, the hallmark of a bowler is, is he executing the plans he has got for each and every batsmen? Right from ball one, he’s on the money. He knows where he has to land the ball, and he does that efficiently with the variations he has got. So, one thing that makes sure Bumrah is way ahead of other bowlers in international cricket, especially in Test match cricket, is the amount of variations he’s got.”

He almost reminds me of Wasim Akram. For me, Wasim Akram was the toughest bowler I have faced because of the amount of variations he had and the control he had over those variations. Bumrah has got those variations just like Wasim had.”

Bumrah had made his Test debut earlier this year in the Test series against South Africa. And in the nine Tests he played this year, he picked 48 wickets which include a five-wicket haul in each of the overseas Test he played. His tally in Test cricket is the most by an Indian pacer in a calendar year and the third most by a player in his debut year.

Bumrah’s success comes from his consistency with the pace and ability to bring in variations to the table.
