Teachers Day is around the corner and it is the perfect time to celebrate your favorite teachers. Former President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birthday is celebrated as Teacher’s Day in India. A lot of history and significance attached to it.

Teacher’s Day is celebrated on different dates across the world. In India, Teacher’s day is celebrated on September 5th; it is the birth anniversary of the former president Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, one of the prolific scholar, teacher, and promoter of education.

Happy Teacher’s Day 2018: Brief History

In the year 1962, the first Teacher’s Day was celebrated in India. It has been observed that Radhakrishnan became the first vice-president of India and succeeded Rajendra Prashad to become the second president of the country.

Radhakrishnan was born on September 5th, 1882 into a Telegu Brahmin family in Tirutani in Andhra Pradesh. He completed his Master’s in Philosophy from the University of Madras. Later, he went on to teach in University of Mysore and University of Calcutta, where he was quite popular and loved among the student’s community.

Radhakrishnan marched forward and became Vice Chancellor at Andhra University and Banaras Hindu University. He was called to take the Chair of Spalding Professor of Eastern Religions in the Oxford University.

Then, he moved further towards the well being of the country and became the President of India, his friends and students requested him to let them observe his birthday. Radhakrishnan politely said that “instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers’ Day.”

He always wanted to pay respect and tribute to the greatest teachers of India and Bangladesh. Since then, we celebrate 5th September as Teacher’s Day in India.

Radhakrishnan was facilitated for Bharat Ratna in the year 1931, besides this, he also gained the title of highest civilian awards like Knighthood. He was also nominated eleven times for the Nobel Peace Prize until he passed away in the year 1975.

Evidently, a teacher is someone who helps us grow and make us a better person by shaping our knowledge and personality. They carry a huge baggage of responsibility to educate the coming generations with a mission to build a better world for us to live.

However, it should be our respectable duty to celebrate our teachers and be grateful to them for their efforts and actions. So, on September 5th, every school, college, and University of the country celebrate this exceptional day with so much enthusiasm and shower their respect, humble gifts or take the class on their behalf.
