According to the Mythology, Lord Jagannath is the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. The name is derived from 2 words ‘Jagat’ and ‘nath’ it means the lord of the universe. The 3 deities of Lord Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra are one of their kind and are unlike other deities with the human form. They are dark, shapeless and have large eyes.
There are a number of stories behind the shape of deities. One story says that when king Subal, a devotee of Lord Jagannath wanted to create the deity of god, he went inside the room and didn’t bother to follow the instruction of sculptor. After sculptor left leaving the deities unfinished they were placed like that only. And till today they all 3 deities are pulled in the chariot in that same exact shape.
