Onam, the annual festival of Malayalis originated from Kerala. The annual harvest festival is observed for ten days and is majorly celebrated on the last day. The observance began on August 15, the first day is known as Atham and the last day which is today on August 24 is known as Thiruvonam. 10th day calls for a major celebration as it marks the home-coming of the mythical king Mahabali.
As per Malyalam Solar calendar, the festival is celebrated in the month of Chingam that falls in August-September.
Onam is celebrated with lots of enthusiasm and one can see lots of color and celebration on the day.
The event like Vallam Kali (snake boat races), Kummati Kali (mask dance), Pulikali (tiger dance), Onathallu (martial arts), and Atthachamayam (folk songs and dance are practiced during Onam celebration. People also make Pookkalam (flower rangoli) outside their houses.
