15 January 2019 is celebrated as Indian Army Day every year. The same day in 1949, Field Marshal KM Cariappa took control of Indian army from General Sir Francis Butcher.

General Sir Francis Butcher was the last British commander chief. On 15 January 2019, Indian army will celebrate its 71st Army Day or Sena Diwas. Let’s know some important facts about the Indian Army and feel proud.

Why do we celebrate the Indian Army Day?

On 15 January 1947, Field Marshal KM Cariappa took rein of Indian Army from British last commander chief General Sir Francis Butcher. KM Cariappa was the first officer who was given the rank of Field Marshal. He also led the Indian army in Indian-Pak war in 1947.

Indian Army was organized in Kolkata and East India Company founded it. There are 53 cantonments and 9 army bases active at present.

First War over Kashmir:

After independence, the Indian Government was trying to unified dominion (Riyasat) in India. During this time Pakistan attacked Kashmir on 22 October 1947. War was extended to 1 year. This war was special because the Indian army was divided into two parts. Once who were together in the same army, now those were stretching their swords against each other.

Hyderabad war with Nizaam:

This was a time when unified dominions movement was on its peak. During this time Hyderabad Nizaam wanted to stay free. On 12 September 1948, Sardar Bhalabbhai Patel ordered to attack over Hyderabad.

Major General Jayanto Nath Chaudhry took the command of the army and won over Nizzam within just five days. After that Major General Jayanto Nath Chaudhry was declared Martial of Hyderabad.

Indian army and UN Peacekeeping Force:

Indian Army has played a vital role for peace in many countries such as Congo, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Rwanda, Angola, Cambodia, Angola, Cyprus, Vietnam, Mozambican, and many more.

Daman & Diu and Goa:

After independence, Indian subcontinents, Daman &Diu were under the control of Portuguese. Indian government tried to solve the issues with the conversation but it doesn’t land on any solution. No solution left for Indian Army else to attack Goa, and Daman & Diu. Indian Army takes control over these within 26 hours.

Second War over Kashmir with Pakistan:

On August 1965, Pakistan again caught node of Kashmir and attacked Kashmir. The war took place between India and Pakistan, in which the Indian Army defeated Pakistan badly. The war is popular because the Indian Army had taken control over Lahore in Pakistan.

Freed Bangladesh:

Pakistan army had crossed all the limit of humanity in East Pakistan. Pakistan Army was alleged to rape about 2 Lakh women and mass murders in Bangladesh according to historians. Crores of Bangladeshi ran to India for Shelter.

3 December 1971, India called for the attack on Pakistan army and showed the responsibility of sensible neighbor. Indian army did not care for America’s stand against India. America tried to intimate by using its naval army in Bengal Ki Khadi but nothing could shake Indian army’s courage.

On 16 December, Indian Army compelled Pakistan Army to drop the weapons and made them surrender with Pakistani General and his 90 thousand soldiers.

This war created an Independent Bangladesh with help of Indian Army.

Kargil War:

In 1998, Pakistani army helped intruders to capture Kargil peaks. In May 1999, with the information of a local Shepherd, Indian army got to know that in Batallic sector there was an attack on Lt. Shourabh Kaliya petrol pump. Indian army introduced operation Vijay to tackle intrude.

This war was fought on about 18 thousand Feet Kargil peak where 527 Indian Army soldiers got pride to sacrifice their life for the sake of motherland whereas 1363 soldiers wounded.

The operation Vijay was started on 8 May 1999 and ended on 26 July 1999.

 

Indian Army Day 2019:

But Special thing about Indian Army Day this year is that a woman officer is going to lead the parade. Lieutenant Bhavana Kasturi is the name who will get this honor in Indian Army Day Parade 2019. This is the first time when Army Chief Bipin Rawat will receive the salute.
