Happy Pongal 2019: India being the land of colour, Culture, Beauty and festivals, there are many occasions which will delight you with its essence of celebrations.

Pongal (Thai Pongal) is one amongst those delighting festival which is correspondence of the Hindu calendar’s New Year ‘Makar Sankranti’.

Pongal is the Harvest festival which is dedicated to the sun-god. People show their gratitude to the god for the year’s harvest of their crops with the grand celebrations and happiness.

Pongal is the premier festival celebrated in Tamil-Nadu which is basically four day festival. The festival normally commence between 14th of January to 17th of January each year.

This year in 2019, Pongal will commence between 15th of January (Tuesday) to 19th of January (Friday) and the main pongal is on 16th of January.

The term ‘PONGAL’ in Tamil means ‘overflowing’ and falls around the Lohri every year which is around mid of January.

Apart from the grand celebration in Tamil-Nadu, the festival is celebrated by Tamil people throughout the Indian state as well as worldwide. Mainly you can enjoy this feast in Tamil Nadu, Union territory of India ‘Puducherry’, and the country Sri Lanka. Including to this in Malaysia, Mauritius, South Africa, United States, Singapore, Canada and UK wherever there is Tamil.

The main dish consumed on this day is ‘Sweetened rice boiled with Lentils’.

The dish preparation includes rice, Milk and additional sweet dish of Cardamom, raisins, green gram (split) and Cashew nuts.

As the dish is dedicated to the Sun-God, it is preferably prepared in a porch or courtyard which it is proper sunny.

The cooking is done on a clay pot which is beautifully decorated with coloured patterned and named as ‘KOLAM’. The food is prepared in two variants one is Sweet and one is Savoury and finally the dish is served on ‘Banana Leaves’.

It is good to know that cooking Pongal is a traditional practice by Tamil in the Hindu temples during any part of the Temple festival in Tamil Nadu.

 4 Days of Pongal Festive Season

Pongal is celebrated in four days by celebrating the zeal of it. the festival starts from ‘Bhogi’ and completing the 4 days of festive season by ‘Kaanum’.

The first day preceding the Pongal is called ‘Bhogi’ which is also called as ‘Bhogi Mantalu’. On this day people toss and burn all the old useless belonging and possession with them. People assemble at dawn and burn all these useless possession on the Bonfire which is traditionally made of cow dung cakes and dried woods.

The festival is celebrated in the Honour of Lord Indira, the God of rain and lord of lords.

Bhogi also is observed as Bhogi Pallu in Andhra Pradesh on the same day. This day is celebrated in Punjab as Lohri, Assam as Magh Bihu/Bhogali Bihu.

Out of four day of Pongal celebration, Thai pongal is celebrated on the 2nd day of the festive season and it is the main event of the festival.

In Tamil Ponal means ‘overflawing’ signifying the abundance and prosperity.

During this ritual, milked is cooked in a vessel preferably clay pot in the open sun. The pot is tied by turmeric plant. Along with this sticks of sugarcane, bananas and coconuts are also offered to the sun. As the milk stars overflowing, a freshly harvested rice grains are added to the boiling milk. At the same time, participants there blow Conch called as ‘Sanggu’ and shout ‘Pongalo Pongal!’. They also recite ‘Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakku’ (The commencement of Thai paves the way of new opportunity) and repeated again and again.

Then the pongal is served everyone in the house with other savouries and sweets like vadai, murukku, paayasam etc.

Third day of Pongal is called Mattu and on this day worship of cattle take place and it is afforded on this day. In tamil Nadu, they regard the cattle as the source of wealth for providing dairy products, fertilizer, and labour for providing plow and transportation.

The day features with the game Jalikkattu and taming bull.

On mattu celebrant decorated their cattle after bathing them, with manjalthanni (turmeric water) and oil. Kungumam (kumkum) is applied on the forehead of the cattel, their horns are painted, feed them mixture venn pongal, jiggery, honey, banana and other fruits. In the evening people pray to the lord Ganesha.

Another ritual includes the lightening of torch made of coconut leaves and carry it and move around the cattle three times and before it finishes, run and drop it to the village border. This believe to remove all the evil influence caused by the jealousy of people over the cattle.



The festive season of pongal ends on the 4th day with the celebration of Kaanum. The Kaanum is having the literal meaning ‘To visit’ and many family hold reunion on this day.

This ritual is mainly performed by the women of the family where the left over sweets of pongal and other items are arranged on the turmeric leaves along with beetle nuts, beetle leaves and sugarcane and women starts this offering in the name of their brothers asking for their prosperity.

Relatives of the family exchange the gifts to each other whishing the prosperous and happy life ahead.

Folklore Behind the Festival of Pongal

The Pongal’s origin is believed to be more than 1000 years ago. The researches gives the evidence that the festival was celebrated as ‘Puthiyeedu’ during the Medieval Chola empire era. During which it was believed to represent the harvest of the year.

Tamil people also refer this festival as ‘Tamizhar Thirunaal’ which means ‘The festival of Tamizhs.

The same festival is reffered as Makara Sankranti which is the new year day according to the hindu calendar ‘Surya Sidhanta’
