Happy Holika Dahan 2019 – Story & Ritual
The story goes like that once upon a time there was a Demon king called Hiranakashyap who was immortal. He barred the people of the kingdom to praise him instead of any other God and considered himself as God. He wanted to become immortal so he started performing hard penance to please Lord Brahma. One day Lord Brahma appeared in front of him because he was pleased with his penance and Lord Brahma granted him the five powers.
He gave him the power of immortality with 5 boons.
- Hiranakahsyap could not be killed by a human nor an animal.
- He could not be killed inside the home nor outside of it.
- He could not be killed in day or night.
- He could not be killed by Ashtra or Shastra.
- He could not be killed on land, air or water.
Lord Brahma granted him the all the five boons and he built an attitude that he is only the God and nobody can kill him and all the persons have to worship him.
Now he was blessed with a son. The only problem was son grew up to be a huge devotee of Lord Vishnu and with the passage of time, the devotion of Prahalad became a thorn in the eye of Hiranakashyap. He tried to kill his son with all his might but as Prahalad was a huge devotee to Lord Vishnu, Hiranakashyap was unable to kill his son.
He took help of his sister Holika. Holika was given a boon by Brahma that nobody could hurt her. She also had a shawl which protected her. He said to Holika to sit with Prahlad on the pyre and burn him. But the opposite happened. When she sat on the Pyre the shawl that protected her flew away and covered Prahalad and instead she was burnt into flames.
Afterward, Hiranakahsyap tried to kill him but Lord Narasimha appeared to form a pillar and killed Hiranakahsyap. It was neither a day or night. He was killed neither outside nor inside. All the boon was counterattacked.
So this is the great story of Holika Dahan and it signifies the demon which is lust, ego, attachment, greed, and jealousy.
Even today, people enact the scene of ‘Holika’s burning to ashes’ every year to mark the victory of good over evil. Further, on the last day of Holi, people take a little fire from the bonfire to their homes. It is believed that by following this custom their homes will be rendered pure and their bodies will be free from disease.
