Legend Behind the Holi Celebration
Holi is the festival of joy. In India every festival is celebrated with some meaning and they have some interesting story behind it. Even though the folklore may vary from place to place and regions to regions; but the meaning it has same in every nook and corner of India.
Similarily is with Holi, even though there are so, many myth is behind this festival but rejoice of celebration remains same everywhere. Following are two main most acceptable folklore associated with the festival.
So, why is holi celebrated?
About: Vishnu Legend
One of the main legends behind the festival celebration is about the honor of Hindu God vishnu and his devotee and follower ‘prahalad.’
The story goes as follows:
According to the chapter 7 of ‘Bhagvata Purana’ The King ‘HIRANYAKASHIPU’ was the king of demons (asuras) and had got the boon which gave him 5 special powers. Which goes as follows:
- He could neither be killed by animal or by Human.
- Neither can be killed indoor or outdoor.
- Neither at night or in Day.
- Neither can be killed by ASTRA (projectile weapons) or by SHASHTRA (Handheld weapon)
- Neither can he be killed on land nor on water.
Now what happened is that he now thought himself a God and ordered everyone to worship him.
But on the other hand, His own son ‘Prahalad’ refused to adore him. Because he was devoted to the lord Vishnu.
This infuriated to Hiranakashipu and Prahalad was subjected to many cruel punishments but none of them affected his decision.
But finally Holika (Hiranakashyapu’s sister and Prahalad’s evil aunt) tricked him to sit on the pyre with her. Here Holika wear a Cloak which was to protect her from fire but as the fire roared, the cloak which was embracing Holika flew from Holika and encased Prahalad hence saving him from fire and at the same time ‘Holika’ was burnt alive in that same fire.
This was the time when Vishnu appears as an avatar (incarnation) and to restore the Dharma, he took the form of NARASIMHA [Half Human and Half Lion], At Dusk [which was neither day nor night], He took the Hiranakashyapu at Doorsteps [Which was neither indoor nor outdoor], Placed in on His Lap [which was neither Land nor Water and not even the Air], and Eviscerated and killed the king ‘Hiranakashyapu’ with his lion Claws [Which was nor Asatra nor Sastra].
Hence when all the conditions were against him, he was killed and the victory of Good over Evil took place.
About: Krishna Legend
If you go to the Braj region of India, where the Hindu Diety Krisha growth took place, the festival is known as RANGPANCHAMI in the memoir of love between the Radha and Krishna. This part also celebrated the festival in the spring.
The myth goes like that in the babyhood of Krishna he developed the dark skin colour due to the poisoned breast milk feed of She-demon named ‘Putana’.
He was in despair whether fair skinned Radha or other girl would like him or not. Krishna’s mother in desperation asked Krishna to go to radha and apply the colour on her face of whatever color he wanted for her to look in and this is what exactly he does. The same day onwards both became a friend. Ever since the playful coloring of Radha’s face is commemorated as Holi.
Apart from the above two main legends mentioned to you, you will come to know many more folklore behind this colorful festival celebration with the one thing common that is festival of rejoice and colorings.
