Eid al-Adha which is also known as Eid ul-adha is one of the two great festivals (Eid al-Fitr and Eid al Adha) of Muslims and celebrated with special prayers, greetings and gifts sharing. The day is also known as Festival of Sacrifice and it is celebrated as the gazette holiday in India.
The festival honors the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his only son to God on god’s command, since the God was examining him about his faith in God. But before Abraham could sacrifice his son, god provided him a lamb to sacrifice instead.
In the commemoration of this sacrifice and the event, one animal (mostly Lamb/ Goat’s male Kid) is sacrificed and divided into 3 parts, one goes to poor and needy, another share goes to family and 3rd share goes to the relatives.

History And Origins
The History of the festival starts from the examination of his faith by god. Abraham (IBRAHIM) was the biggest devotee and obedient of god and his command. So, to test the deepness of his faith, God commanded Ibrahim to sacrifice his only son, (the dearest possession of Ibrahim) to God. The son is named as ISHMAEL in Quran (Muslims Religious Book) and Isaac in Bible (Christians Religious Book).
Upon hearing the God’s Command and without asking a question from him (about why the god was even taking away his only son ‘the only pillar and support of old age’) He started the preparation. During the preparation, Shaitan (The Devil) was tempting Abraham not to Slauther and was dissuading his family from carrying out God’s Commandment, but Abraham Abraham pelted and drop Satan away by throwing pebble at him. And this is why in the commemoration and symbolism of this rejection of Satan, stones are thrown at the symbolic pillar during the ‘Stoning of the Devil’s’ during Hajj rites.
So, when Ibrahim attempted to cut his son’s throat to obey the god’s command on mount Arafat, He was astonished by the incident and found that his son was replaced unharmed by an animal (Lamb) and it was slathered instead. And ultimately Abraham passed the test by his willingness to carry out the God’s Command.
This same story is known as AKEDAH in Judaism (Binding of Issac) and originates in TORA, the book of Moses.
By this Abraham shown that his love for god was superior to all the others and that he would lay down his own life itself or the life of dearest to him in the submission of God’s Command.
This is why Muslims commemorates this ultimate act of sacrifice every year during Eid al-Adha.
While Abraham was ready to make the ultimate sacrifice for god, God ultimately prevents the sacrifice and signifying that one should never sacrifice a human life especially not in the name of God.
The Word ‘EID’ itself appears once in Al-Maida, the 5th Sura of Quran which means ‘Solemn festival’.
