The chhath puja is dedicated to the sun-god (surya Devta) as well as chhatti maiya to thank them by bestowing the life on the planet and request them to grant certain wishes and peace, happiness and prosperity of life.
While this is the festival of Hindus, even the muslims celebrated this festival with the intention behind it.

Date of Chhath Puja 2018
Normally the chhath is 4 days of the festival but the main Chhath Puja 2018 is going to commence on 13th of November this year.
On the 13th of evening, the chhath starts with the aragya to the setting sun and followed by aragya to the rising sun on 14th November. The festival hence starts from 11th of November to the 14th of November.
The festival is also celebrated in the month of summer between March to April i.e on chaitra shashthi (some days past Holi) which is known by Chaiti chhath.
Chath is the festival in which fasting is done without a sip of water for around 36 hours continuously without drop (Nirjala vrath).
Significance of Festival
The rituals behind this festival celebration is rigorous and lasting for 4 days, Starting from ‘NAHAY KHAY’ to ‘USHA ARGHYA’ it is a series of touch but devoted ritual to celebrate the festival.
The ritual includes Holy bathing, fasting and Vratta (abstaining from the drinking water). Further standing in water for long duration of time and offering Prasad (Prayer offering of god to people after prayer) and Aragya to setting and rising sun that too in the freezing water of a small pond in the winter.
Some devotee also performs the prostration march towards the aragya place i.e side of the river with the essential pooja thali with them.
The goddess who is worshiped during the Puja of chaath is called as CHHATHI MAIYA. In Vedas the Chhathi maiya is known as Usha. When you go with the Vedas, Usha is known to be the beloved younger wife of Surya (the sun god).
Chhatt Puja Every Year
Chhath is performed on every Kartika Shukla Shashthi I.e the 6th day of the month Karthika in Vikram Samvat. The date usually falls typically in the month of October or November of English calendar which is exactly the 6th day after the main Diwali festival. The festival is also celebrated in the month of Chaitra.

Chhath Puja worshiping starts form the first day Called Nahay Khay (11th November). Ritual includes dipping into the holy river and cooking of proper delicious meals for themselves.
KADDU BHAAT and Channa Dal is a common meal preparation of this day which is prepared by using the clay or bronze utensils and mango wood over the clay Stove (Chulha).
The lady of the family observing fast can have only one meal on this day of Chhath start.
Lohanda and Kharna
On the second day of chhath i.e, ‘Lohanda and Kharna’ devotees have to stay fast for the entire day which only can be broken after the sunset. Parvaitins (the one who observes the fast for that whole day) cook the whole Prasad by themselves and the prasaaad includes making of chapatti and Kheer to break their fast. After this only meal on the second day, parvaitins have to fast for the next 36 hours continuously without one drop sipping of water (Nirjala vrath).
The 3rd day of chath known as ‘Sandhya Arghya’ on the ritual of offering the Prasad to the setting sun. the ritual includes preparing of Prasad for the whole day, and in the evening the members of the family accompany the Vratins (fasting lady of the family) to the bank ofthe river where they make the offering to the setting sun. Normally the woman wear Sarees of turmeric yellow colour at the time of offering. The evening is made even more enthusiastic with the folk songs sung at the time of rituals and coming back to home.
The whole rigorous rituals of chhath ends with the 4th day of rising sun (Usha Araghya) offering.
On this last day, all the devotees proceed to the river bank before sunrise in the morning. The vrath only ends by offering the Aragh to the rising sun, no matter when it is going to rise.
With the offering to rising sun, the continuous 36 hours of fasting (Paran) ends in the morning.
The fasting lady of the family break their fast with the light fruit juice.
Then the relatives come over their house to have their share of offering (Prasad).
Chhath Puja History
It is believed that the chath puja rituals my date back to ancient era because you may find the mentions of worship of sun god in ancient Veda and the rigveda also feartures the adulation of hymn to lord surya and different similar customs.
This festival is also correlated with the evidence of Sanskrit Epic poem of Mahabharata in which Draupadi is described as seen to be following the same rituals.
The recent scientific history also confirms the festival of Vedic era. The ancient time rishis were also able to stay alive without the intake of food and only by the energy of sunlight which was possible only by following the rituals of chhath Puja.
Like the above there are so many myths behind this chhath festival with one thing common, that is adoration of god ‘Surya’ a source of energy and showing gratitude for this.
