As bhai dooj meaning varies from place to place, accordingly the story varies. There are many myths folklore associated with the festival of Bhai Dhooj.

According to One popular Folklore, ‘Lord Krishna visited his Sister Subhadra after slaying the notorious and evil demon ‘Narakasura’ and his sister welcomed him with the sweets and flower. She also affectionately applied the victory Tilak on the forehead Krishna. This particular gesture of his sister warmed Krishna’s heart and He blessed her with many abundance and boons.

In another Folklore, Yamaraj (the God of Death) once visited his sister’s (Yamuna) house and the thrilled Yamuna welcomed her brother with aarti and applied tilak on his forehead and offered him sweets and gifts. Warmed from her sister reception and affection, Yama gave her a boon that whoever celebrated Bhai Dhooj with her sister and took bath in the holy river would not go to hell. This is why In some parts of India, the festival is also known as Yamadwitheya (or Yamadvitiya).
