In pages of History, the festival is said to be celebrated first in late 1500. According to the historians, the zamindars of Dinajpur and Malda initiated the first Durga Puja in Bengal. In another story, the Raja Kangshanarayan of Taherpur or Bhabananda Mazumdar of Nadiya organized the first Durga Puja in Bengal in the year 1606.

It is reported that in the British Raj the auditor-general Jhon Chips organized Durga Puja at his Birbhum office and Britishers also fully participated in these events. When the India capital was shifted into Delhi many of the government officials also shifted to Delhi in 1911. So first Durga Puja was held in Delhi in the year 1910.

The huge temporary canopies—held by a framework of bamboo poles and draped with colorful fabric—that house the icons are called ‘pandals.’ Modern pandals are innovative, artistic and decorative at the same time, offering a visual spectacle for the numerous visitors who go ‘pandal-hopping’ during the four days of Durga Puja.
