What is the mythology Behind the New Year?

The story goes like that there was a mythical beast known as NIAN. He was a type of monster for the villagers. Nian ate the villagers and all the people were very scared from Nian. Nian’s main pry were children. One day they all gathered and decided that they would hide from the beast. When they were hiding then suddenly an old person appeared in front of them. The old man said to the villagers that he would stay awake and fight with Nian and destroy the beast.

The villagers thought that the old man has lost his mind. At that night when Nian came to eat the villagers the old man made a setup and put the red papers all over him and the village. He also set off the firecrackers on that night.

Next day all the villagers came back to their house and saw that all things are saved. The beast was not able to destroy even a single home. The old man also vanished. The people thought that the old man was a deity and he came to protect all the villagers. The villagers came to know that Nian was afraid of Red color papers and firecrackers that made a loud noise.

In the event of the New Year from then onwards the people of China celebrates the New Year in this form only. They wear red color clothes and all the things are displayed in red and firecrackers are burnt. This is done to frighten away Nian the beast. The Nian was ultimately captured by Hongjun Laozu, an ancient Taoist monk. After that, Nian moves back to a nearby mountain.
