Birth of Dr Bheem Rao Ambedkar


Dr. Ambedkar was born on 14th april, 1891 in the central provice of M.P (Madhya Pradesh) surrounding the Military Cantonment of Mhow. He was the son of Murbadkar Sakpal (father) and Bhimabai Murbadkar Sakpal (mother). The trauma of being taunt, comment, torture which was due to his lower cast ‘Mahar’ (Dalit) started from his childhood onwards and from his Schoolings. He was subjected to socio-economic discrimination and were treated as Untouchable which ultimately shook him from inside.

Ambedkar’s Struggle, Marriage and Social-Reformation


The tragedy was that Ambedkar’s ancestors had given his service in the British east India Company and his father himself served the British Indian army for the Mhow Cantonment. Even though he got the chance to study and attended school, it was reported that he is given a little attention or assistance by teacher. He was considered as untouchable and not even allowed to sit in the class with other students.

If Ambedkar and his family had to drink water, someone from the upper caste was said to pour water from a height for them since they we not allowed to touch either water or the vessel that contains it. This treatment he was getting from the school peon and if the peon was not available, he had to go without water. This is the situation which he mentions in his writing “No Peon, No Water

It was his struggle to truth and despite all the hardship he was faced form the other human being and students of his age, He was the only untouchable of 1897 who enrolled at Elphinstone High School.

His marriage also was a child marriage but acceptable to that era and he got married at the age of 15 to the 9 year old girl named Ramabai.

Ambedkar’s Education and Accomplishments


His degree was completed in Economics and Political science from the same college i.e Elphinstone College, University of Mumbai.

Further he completed his master degree in Economics (as a Major Subject) at Columbia University and Doctor of Science in Economics with the help of his Scholarship from the London School of Economics.

After the completion of his Doctoral Degree, He went to work as Legal Professional. It was in the year 1926, when he defeated 3 Non-brahmin leader who accused the Brahmin community that they are ruining India and subsequently sued for Libel.

In addition of his law practice in the Bombay High Court, He tried to help out the so called untouchable community by giving them the education and uplift them. ‘Central Institution Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha’ was the first successful attempt and organized establishment of Ambedkar intended to Promote education among Socio-economic improvement  and for the welfare of ‘Outcaste’ and suppressed cast and people of society.

To defend the Dalit rights he periodically started and conducted many revolutions like Mook Nayak, Bhishkrit Bharat and Equality Janta.

Adding the goldmine to India, in 1947 when India got independence, he got a proposal to serve as a country’s first law minister by congress and appointed as a chairman of the constitution drafting Committee on 29th of August, 1947. His work and written law as Constitution was adopted by Constituent Assembly on November 26th 1949.

Aryan Invasion Theory and Manusmriti Theory Opposition

Aryan Invasion theory was rejected because the theory depicts the invation and origin of Indo-Aryan people from outside South Asia. According to Babasaheb, he viewed and consider Shudras as Aryana.

On 25th December, 1927, Ambedkar publically condemns the ideology of Manusmriti which was justifying the caste discrimination and untouchability. He led Hundreds and thousands of Dalits and burnt the copies of text which was papered supporting Manusmriti Ideology.

Boycott of Article 370 of the Constitution

Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar always condemned article 370 of the Indian constitution which grants the special status to Jammu and Kashmir and which was completely against his wishes. He dedication for the society can be understood, by his resigned for Gender equality in the year 1951 when the parliament delayed his procedure for the enact of gender equality in the Inheritance law.

Buddhism Conversion

According to the Scholar Stephen P Cohen, Ambedkar once consider to convert himself to Sikhism but after meeting the Sikh Leader later, He concluded to get ‘Second-rate’ Sikh Status.

But instead He studied the Budhhism for all his life and travelled to Sri Lanka to attend a meeting on the ‘World Fellowship of Buddhists.’

After meeting with the Sri Lankan Buddhists there and the Buddhist Monk ‘Hammalawa Saddhatissa, Ambedkar conducted a formal organized public ceremony for himself as well as their supporter in Nagpur dated 14th October of the year 1956. He accepted 3 refuges and 5 precepts from a Buddhist Monk, in complete traditional manner of theirs along his Second Wife name Savita.

Ambedkar’s Death/Departure


It was 6th of December, 1956 when in Delhi he passes away and he was cremated according to the Buddhism ceremonials.

Achievments and Awards and Tributes

  • In the year 1990, Dr. Ambedkar was posthumously Conffered with the ‘Bharat Ratna award’ which is the India’s highest Civilian Award.
  • Babasaheb’s first birthday was first celebrated publically on 14th of April 1928 in Pune. The celebration was done by social activist and by ‘Ambedkarite Janardan Sadashiv’ Ranpise. By then the Ambedkar jayanti or anniversary if him is celebrated publically.
  • The period between the 14th April 1990 and 14th april 1991 was observed as the ‘year of Social Justice’ in the memory of Babasaheb Ambedkar. Apart from Indian, the jayanti was celebrated in the years 2016, 2017 and 2018.
  • Google-doodle was published for Ambedakar tribute on his 124th birth anniversary.
  • Government of maharastra observed the ambedkar jayanti which is on 14th april as ‘Knowledge day’ in the state.
