Xiaomi organized its 8th-anniversary special event in Shenzhen, China where the company launched 7 products in total. Now the Mi 8-series smartphones are official along with MIUI 10 interface, Mi band 3 fitness band, Mi VR standalone headsets powered by Snapdragon 821 SoC, and the Mi TV 4 75-inch model. But the major highlight of the event was the smartphone announcement, which incorporates Mi 8, Mi 8 SE and Mi 8 Explorer Edition.
What is the major difference between Xiaomi’s Mi 8- Series Smartphones?
The Mi 8 price starts at RMB 2,699 (approximately Rs 28,550) for the base model with 64 GB internal storage. The 128GB model is priced at RMB 2,999 (approximately Rs 31,550), whereas the top end model with 256 storage will set you back by RMB 3,299 (approximately Rs34, 750).
On the other hand, the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, will set you back by RMB 3,699, which goes approximately to Rs 39,000. Whereas the compact Mi 8 SE is priced at RMB 1,799 (approximately Rs 18,900) for the base model with 4GB RAM, and the top end model with 6GB RAM will set you back by RMB 1,999 (approximately Rs 21,150).
The Mi 8 and Mi 8 Explorer Edition smartphones are powered by the latest & fastest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 octa-core SoC. On the other hand, Mi 8 SE, is the first smartphone to be powered by the recently declared Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 octa-core SoC.
Whereas Mi 8 comes with 6GB RAM and three other basic configurations of 64GB internal storage, 128GB internal storage, and 258GB internal storage.
On the other hand, the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, is only offered by single configuration with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.
Finally, the Mi 8 SE is offered in 4GB RAM with 64GB storage and 6GB RAM with 64GB storage.
Xiaomi’s all the three smartphones features full HD+AMOLED display featuring ratio of 18:7:9 and a notch on top. While the Mi 8 and Mi 8 Explorer Edition, smartphones features a 6.21-inch panel, the Mi 8 SE comes with a moderately compact 5.88-inch display. The panel is an HDRD10 complaint, and all the three smartphone’s screen is covered with coring Gorilla Glass protection.
After the likes of Huawei, Oppo and Vivo and even Xiaomi are going high on Al cameras. Both the Mi 8 and Mi 8 Explorer Edition features vertically stacked dual cameras at the back. From the two, one is a 12-megapixel sensor with wide angle lens, and other is a 12-megapixel sensor with a telephoto lens.
The Al is capable of screen detection, white balance, and other settings. You also get Al portrait mode for depth of field effects. Also, Mi 8 has logged a photo score of 105 by DxOMark, leaving behind the iPhone X and Pixel 2.
And, Mi 8 SE comes with Al dual cameras where the primary sensors are of 12-megapixel resolution and secondary is a 5-megapixel depth sensor. Up front, gets you a 20-megapixel camera with Al background bokeh and beauty mode. Also, it includes Facial recognition, business card recognition, portrait mode, intelligent translation and many more.
Software and Security
The three smartphones run on Android 8.1 Oreo OS with latest MIUI 10 skin on top. MIUI 10 has got many improvements from the previous interface, and Xiaomi has furthermore added a lot of Al chops as well. Let it be the battery management or AI preload features that anticipate the app you would need to preload them, also they offer faster app load times.
In case of security, all the three smartphones get Infrared based 3D face unlock feature, and while the Mi 8 and Mi 8 SE comes with a fingerprint sensor, present at the back, while the Mi 8 Explorer Edition comes with an in-display fingerprint scanning technology.
Connectivity and Battery
In the Mi 8-series smartphones, connectivity options include Bluetooth, 4G LTE with VoLTE, dual GPS and Wi-Fi 802.11ac and USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer. To use the cell phone for a longer extent, you get a 3,400mAh battery on the Mi 8, a 3,000mAh battery on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, whereas the Mi 8 SE gets a 3,120mAh battery.
