Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik paid tribute to the hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on the special event of National Sports Day.
National Sports Day is celebrated on 29th August in India to mark the birthday anniversary of Veteran hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. Like Bradman in cricket, Dhyan Chand had put blood and sweat on the field and became a legend by creating tales of accomplishments.
Notify hockey as India’s National Game

“As you know sir, the next World Cup Hockey will be held in Odisha in November this year. While reviewing the preparations, I was surprised and shocked to know that what is popularly known as the National Game – Hockey, has in fact never been notified as our National Game,” wrote Patnaik on Wednesday.
On the special event, Naveen Patnaik also tweeted –

The Hockey Men’s World Cup 2018
The Hockey Men’s World Cup will be held at the Kalinga stadium in Odisha from November 28 to December 16.
Men’s team coach Harendra Kumar says, “For the rest of the world, he is Dhyan Chand. But, for us, he is dada. The players respect him because of what he achieved for India. Even today, when several senior players reach the National Stadium for practice, you will see them bowing to his statue as a mark of respect.”
“We can’t aspire to reach his level. He is the greatest hockey player ever. But what he did on the hockey field for India is an inspiration to us all. When we read or hear about those days, we try and do our best ki Indian hockey ko phir wahan laa sakein,” says veteran defender Sardar Singh.
In December 2017, Odisha successfully hosted the Hockey World League despite unseasonal rains.
The revival of our National Game is gaining a lot of recognition and people are rewarded. Seeing New Indian would surely make Major Dhyan Chand smile from above.
