No More Spam Calls In India – TRAI
The first definite step has been taken: Blockchain. Its instant implementation promises a revolutionary solution to the age-old problem of spamming.
TRAI: Blockchain Campaign for Complete Solution of Spam Calls
TRAI has recently released their draft of a consultation paper, as
“Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018”, which has offered usage of blockchain based technologies to stop and check spam calls.
Its instant implementation promises a revolutionary solution to the age-old problem of spamming.
In case, if approved, then TRAI will become one of the largest organization to have successfully utilize blockchain, for any purpose.
TRAI chairman RS Sharma stated, “We (TRAI) are probably be the first organization in the world to leverage blockchain on such a large scale. Indians send around 30 billion messages every month.”
The Procedure of its Working?
As per the draft proposal, TRAI will record all the consents and approvals by customers related to agreeing on telemarketing calls and then create an enormous database of the list.
Also, a list would be created of approval telemarketers, who are permitted to make such calls.
Since blockchain is a distributed record book, being updated in real-time, no party can deny the records.
Hence, if a customer who has chosen out of the telemarketing calls get such calls, then TRAI would be able to quickly identify the telemarketing agency which has made the calls and impose a fine on them.
In such a case, the concerned telemarketing agency won’t have an excuse.
TRAI secretory SK Gupta speaks, “The new norms will give access to only authorized agencies and only at the time when they need to deliver service. Also, details of only those subscribers will be given who have agreed to receive such calls and messages.”
TRAI has also planned a new app, through which a customer can repeal or activate their agreement related to telemarketing calls, at any given time.
TRAI has planned to form an enormous database of all the telemarketing agencies, which are involved in marketing products and services and keep the record on blockchain for authentication and verification.
This is not the first time TRAI has taken any proactive step to safeguard customers from unwanted spams.
- In 2012, TRAI made strict regulations to control this practice.
- Also in 2013, announced penalty of Rs5000 per spam SMS.
- In 2016, TRAI also launched a DND app to block spam calls, but then it seems telemarketer and spammers are always able to find a way.
