Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) brought out a book on CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activities by companies in Kerala titled as “Building a better society – CSR activities by companies in Kerala”, here on Wednesday. The book release by the MP from Thiruvananthapuram Dr. Shashi Tharoor was followed by a session on ‘building a better society’. It was attended by top office bearers of the CII Kerala State Council and others.
Senior government officials from the state government also participated in the session along with the representatives from the partnering companies from Kerala. Thomas John Muthoot, Project Chairman, CII CSR Coffee Table Book and Chairman & Managing Director, Muthoot Fincorp; G Krishna Kumar, Chairman, CII Kerala State Council and Managing Director, Rubfila International; C Padma Kumar, Chairman & Managing Director, Terumo Penpol; KG Madhu, Chairman, CII Thiruvananthapuram Zone and; MR Narayanan, Vice-Chairman, CII Thiruvananthapuram Zone were among others who attended the session.
In his keynote address Shashi Tharoor said, “Apart from profits and smart partnerships, the industries Corporate social responsibility coupled with the political and administrative responsibility of the government and bureaucracy can help save those beyond subsistence level.”
“The moment it is made mandatory it is no more voluntary. Instead, CSR should form part of the voluntary effort of every profit-making organization”, he added.
Thomas John Muthoot, chairman of the CII-CSR project and Muthoot Fincorp spelt out the significance of CSR activities by corporate firms and how they can eventually help the underprivileged. Dr. Divya S Iyer, Sub Collector and sub-divisional magistrate said in her special address, “It is by virtue of the profession and power that some gain direct access to the muted voices in society, particularly the destitute. They can be supported by the government machinery through proper communication with the corporate groups who are willing to help the deserving as part of their CSR.”
